Science fiction has often portrayed the AI robots of the future in a less than positive light. In movies such as The Matrix, they have enslaved humanity for their potential as batteries, and in Terminator, one comes back to the present as a beefed up, red-eyed cyborg with a thick Austrian accent. The robot manufactured by Toyota however, isn't like that at all, and in fact, was built to help us in the realms of science.
Our robot friend is named Kirobo, and he's a sweet little guy who stands at one foot tall and weighing all of two pounds. What's more? He can talk.
Once he's sent to the International Space Station, Kirobo's mission will utilize his voice recognition ability to converse with Japanese astronauts. Toyota's hope is that will our robot friend not only learn to have full conversations, but also be able to perform tasks around the space station. As the mission progresses, he'll be joined by his sibling, Mirata, who will help guide Kirobo's actions from mission control back on Earth.
It sounds cool, but what's even better, the technology used by these robots may appear in future new Toyota models. For example, the voice recognition software could make an appearance in an upcoming iteration of the entune infotainment system.
One thing that Dayton Toyota finds really cool is how the Japanese manufacturer is not only stepping outside the automotive "circle" with some of its products, but using the technology to give back to it in its own way.
