"The Toyota FJ Cruiser is the real deal, pairing authentic trail toughness with modern conveniences . ."
-The
Car Connection
If you're in the market for a fun SUV with a retro look, the Toyota
FJ Cruiser
might be just the thing. Dayton
Toyota-Scion in
South Brunswick NJ usually has a few on the lot for you to test drive, but
drive the Jeep Grand Cherokee first so you can compare.
Comparing the Toyota FJ Cruiser to the Jeep Grand Cherokee
If
you are considering a new off-road SUV, a quick comparison between the features
of an FJ Cruiser, (starting at $27,030) and a Jeep Grand Cherokee (base trim
starting at $27,695) might help you decide on the best one for you.
Both of these vehicles are designed for peak performance on rough terrain. The
FJ Cruiser can ford water up to 28 inches deep with its elevated air intake and
special electrical component design. The Grand Cherokee's SelecTerrain system
has settings for snow, mud, sand, and rocky terrain for applied handling in a
range of off-road conditions.
As to the engines:
- FJ Cruiser comes with a 4.0-liter V-6 that gets an average of 16 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway
- Grand Cherokee is available with a 3.6-liter V-6 getting an average of 17 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway
Both powertrains yield excellent towing capabilities in addition to providing for superior handling characteristics. The Toyota engine puts out 260 horsepower and 271 lb.-ft. of torque with its Dual Independent Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i). The 6-speed manual transmission comes loaded with a 2-speed transfer case and electronically-controlled locking rear differential.
Rugged exteriors with luxurious interiors
Both
SUVs come with standard safety features, like airbags and stability and
traction control. The difference comes on the surface where you plan to spend
your time cruising. Even though the FJ Cruiser may come off as relatively
sparse and utilitarian when compared to the more luxurious looking Grand
Cherokee interior, you still get Bluetooth technology, a leather-trimmed
steering wheel and a six-speaker sound system. That should be more than enough
comfort for your off-roading.
The Grand Cherokee might make a better choice if you expect to be on paved
roads more often than off-road. The Jeep stands out with comfort and
convenience features in the base trim like: dual-zone temperature control,
leather-wrapped steering wheel, steering-wheel-mounted radio controls,
six-speaker sound system, and keyless entry.
It all depends on whether you'll be spending your time on boulevards or country
lanes.
The award-winning Toyota CJ Cruiser
Besides scoring a whopping 9.4 in KBB.com Consumer Ratings in 2012, the 2013 Toyota CJ Cruiser also earned Best Resale Value in its class by Kelley Blue Book.
