Everyone here at Dayton Toyota was impressed by the latest technology debuted at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Toyota always strives to improve and build vehicles of the highest quality and best fuel-efficiency. What other obstacles could our favorite Japanese automaker try and tackle next? Well, how about a vehicle that can drive itself?

That's right, it's not from a science fiction novel and it definitely wasn't a typo. Toyota unveiled a prototype vehicle that can drive itself without being actively steered by a driver. The technologically advanced car was heavily clad in several different sensors that keep it aware of its position on the road.

Camera equipment and a roof-mounted laser that is also used by Google in their autonomous vehicles keep the Toyota prototype aware of its surroundings. The camera equipment tells the vehicle where the road lanes and traffic signals are. While Google decks out Toyota models for their autonomous vehicles and Toyota uses the Google sensor, both companies have said that they are developing technology independently of one another.

The latest technology combined with our new Toyota vehicle, certainly was a really cool prototype. We're not exactly sure when you'll be able to buy an autonomous vehicle but we can only hope it's sooner rather than later. Of course, this technology opens up a huge conversation regarding safety and who would be at fault in the event of an accident.
