In the RAV4 vs. CR-V battle for
compact crossover SUV dominance, Toyota and Honda both have capable entries.
The RAV4 Sport and CR-V LX both have four-cylinder engines, optional all-wheel
drive, and room for five. Fuel efficiency is practically equal between the
two (22 miles per gallon in the city for both, 29 highway for the Toyota, and
30 highway for the Honda).
What are the differences you should consider when making your buying
decision?
RAV4 vs. CR-V: Styling
At first glance, the RAV4's smart stance, long wheelbase, and
projector-beam headlights give it an edge over the shorter CR-V's older
multi-reflector lights (although the CR-V does come standard with auto-off
headlights).
The RAV4 looks contemporary and rugged compared to the sedan-like lines of the
CR-V. Ground clearance is the same at 6.3 inches, as is their 1,500-pound
towing capacity. Seventeen-inch wheels and a tighter 34.8-foot turning
radius make the Toyota easier to maneuver compared to the CR-V's 16-inch wheels
and 37-foot turning radius. Steel wheels are standard on both, as are
ventilated power-assist front disc brakes.
RAV4 vs. CR-V: Power
Both have four-cylinder engines. The CR-V makes 9 more horsepower (185 vs.
176,) but the RAV-4 makes more torque (163 vs. 176.) With similar fuel
efficiency ratings, the RAV4 has a greater range with its 15.9-gallon tank,
compared to the 15.3-gallon tank in the CR-V. The RAV4 also has a six-speed
transmission, compared to the five-speed in the Honda.
New Jersey drivers will appreciate the standard cold area package in the CR-V,
featuring a heavy-duty battery, starter, and heater.
RAV4 vs. CR-V : Entertainment, safety, and storage space
The Toyota's touchscreen display (at 6.1 inches) is larger than the
Honda's 5-inch LCD. Its audio system also has two more speakers, compared
to the CR-V's four speaker system. Both feature Bluetooth connectivity and easy
connections to iPods and other portable music devices through an audio
jack.
The displays for both vehicles are integrated with a standard rearview camera,
making the larger screen in the Toyota more advantageous when you need to see
what's behind you.
Multiple airbags are standard in both SUVs, as are traction control, anti-lock
brakes, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Both of these compact crossovers
are safe vehicles for you and your family.
The RAV4 has the cargo volume advantage; with the rear seats down its 73.4 cubic
feet beat the CR-V's 70.9 cubic feet.
RAV4 vs. CR-V : Price
Both of these vehicles are similar, but the Toyota costs less — and it comes
with complimentary
two-year regular maintenance and roadside assistance
through Toyota Care. The RAV4 XLE comes in at $26,550 vs. $26,975 for the
CR-V EX AWD.
