We at South Brunswick, NJ Dayton Toyota are thrilled to give our praise and admiration to the students of the St. Augustine School in Kendall Park for their commitment to serving those in their community. While so many were trapped inside and frustrated by this seemingly unending winter, these students were actively using their time stuck indoors to make a difference for those who needed it most.
They started their volunteer work by having a soup-only lunch at their school. This helped to raise awareness for the plight of those in their community that do not have enough to eat. The extra money raised by only serving soup for lunch that day was donated to a local food pantry in hopes that those less fortunate would be provided with enough food to eat.
In addition to the money raised, students, faculty, and staff contributed canned goods to the Outreach Ministry, a local soup kitchen that provides meals for the homeless and poverty-stricken in our community. Not content to simply feed the hungry, the kindergarten class made homemade place mats in hopes of beautifying the soup kitchen's tables and raising the spirits of both the staff and visitors.
The third grade class joined with parents and members of the staff and held prayer meetings to study relevant Scripture and pray for those less fortunate. Afterwards they made personalized bookmarks, each inscribed with a Bible verse designed to lift the spirits and instill hope. These were donated to the Ozanam Men's Shelter run by Catholic Charities and located in New Brunswick.
The principal of St Augustine's, Sister Mary Louise Shulas, is proud of the students, faculty, and staff of her school for making good out of this bad winter but asserts that the generosity shown by all is not unusual. She said, "Simple acts of kindness and teaching awareness to our students is one of the beautiful aspects of our Catholic faith."
Regardless of whether Sister Mary Louise Shulas believes the actions of the students and everyone else at St Augustine's are remarkable, we at South Brunswick, NJ Dayton Toyota find it worth of mentioning. Community involvement at any age is a great way to improve not only a community but all of those who reside in it. We commend the actions of the students, faculty, and staff and encourage everyone to get involved. Even the smallest things, like a beautiful handmade place mat or bookmark, when made with love and sincerity can give hope to those who sometimes struggle to find it.
