Most car factories rely on machines to make their cars. Machines are faster and more efficient, right? Well Toyota employee Mitsuru Kawai disagrees. He thinks that retiring the machines and bringing in some people will greatly improve the car-making process.
During his 50 years working with Toyota, Kawai has seen a lot of changes in car factories. He thinks back to a time when, "experienced masters used to be called gods, and they could make anything."1 His goal is to teach each employee the skills they need to produce great cars and turn each one of them into a master. All of his workers will be able to get work done and solve problems without the help of a machine.
Kawai wants his employees to understand how cars are created on all levels so they can, in turn, create better cars. These skilled workers have already managed to shorten production lines and produce smaller amounts of scrap.
Replacing the machines with people does not mean that Toyota will produce fewer cars each year. It just means that the company just wants to make sure that it is producing only the highest quality vehicles.
