If you're on the lookout for a music festival in New Brunswick, NJ, then you don't want to miss the 2015 New Jersey Folk Festival this month. This annual festival features a huge collection of entertaining and educational cultural performances that help visitors learn about and enjoy the traditional culture of the area.

Given a special theme each year, the 2015 New Jersey Folk Festival will be paying special tribute to the celebration of maritime folk culture. Experience the cultural heritage of fisherman, boat builders, and more from the area through arts, music, crafts, and dance.

There will also be a special focus on the revival performances of sea shanties – crewmembers who worked the large ropes on the ship. Their songs and traditions give them the perseverance to endure such backbreaking work.

In this post, we've gathered all of the important details to help you get the most out of this spectacular event.

History of the New Jersey Folk Festival

Founded on April 25, 1975, the New Jersey Folk Festival set out to celebrate the diverse and indigenous folk life of New Jersey and the surrounding area. Since the beginning, the folk festival has been run by a small group of undergraduate students from Rutgers University. It was ultimately decided that the festival would be held every year on the last Saturday in April.

It didn't take long for the event to become popular with local residents, drawing a crowd of more than 15,000 people every year. Today, the New Jersey Folk Festival is the oldest continuously running folk festival in the state.

2015 New Jersey Folk Festival

This year's New Jersey Folk Festival will be held on April 25 from 10 am to 6 pm, rain or shine. As it has in past years, the event will take place on the large grounds of the Eagleton Institute at the corner of George Street and Ryders Lane on the Douglass campus of Rutgers University. Admission to the New Jersey Folk Festival is always free.

The event will feature four stages with back-to-back performances happening simultaneously on each stage. Be sure to catch the opening ceremonies on the Skylands Stage at 10:45 am, hosted by Master of Ceremonies Bruce Johnson.

Then mingle between the stages to witness a variety of performances, ranging from Irish ballads to Bulgarian dance. At the end of the night, head back to the Skylands Stage and join the Antioch Christian Church Gospel Choir for a wonderful closing performance.

Other notable performances include New Jersey native and folk musician Roger Deitz, the talented Magnolia Street String Band, and a performance by the West Orange High School Step Team.
