This June, the MIT Technology Review ranked Toyota at No. 17 on a list of the 50 Smartest Companies of 2016. The review, published by the esteemed Massachusetts Institute of Technology, only listed two automakers this year.
What did Toyota do to deserve national acclaim as a "smart company"?
Toyota was awarded more patents by the United States Patent and Trademark Office in 2015 than any other automaker in the world. It is more than just a car company -- Toyota is an innovation company, as well.
In particular, MIT made note of the new Toyota Research Institute which opened in January. TRI is focused on developing robotics, artificial intelligence, and self-driving cars.
"We're very grateful to be recognized by MIT, one of the finest educational institutions in the world," proclaimed Jim Lentz, CEO of Toyota Motor North America. "Toyota's scientists are committed to innovation and leading the way to a future of mobility that is cleaner, safer, and provides freedom of mobility for all. In the spirit of kaizen, Toyota is committed to improving every day in the service of our customers and society."
