Traditional safety for cars has always revolved around making them more survivable in a crash—better seatbelts, more airbags, engineered crumple zones, and rigid safety cages. Today, while those things are still as important as ever, a new approach to safety has been changing everything.

Toyota Safety Sense, standard in most new Toyota vehicles, is all about preventing accidents from ever happening.

One of the most significant features of Toyota Safety Sense is the Pre-Collision System (PCS). It's important to keep your eyes on the road, but we all get distracted sometimes. PCS sounds a warning and displays a flashing warning light on the central multi-informational display if it notices you are approaching another car too fast without braking. If this doesn't snap your focus back in time, the vehicle can brake automatically.

Whether the automatic braking can prevent a collision, or simply slow down the impact speed depends on how fast you were traveling, and the specific vehicle and PCS system. The 2017 Toyota Prius, for example, can avoid a collision at speeds up to at least 25 mph according to IIHS testing.
